What Does Your Skin Need Today?
Your skin’s needs can change according to the weather, season, environment and stage of life. An adaptable skincare routine allows you to respond by adjusting the balance between water-based hydration and nourishing lipids—without adding more products or making your routine unnecessarily complicated.
I have never quite fallen in love with a skincare ritual from beginning to end.
I have loved individual products over the years, of course. But I had never found a really simple system that made me think: yes, this makes complete sense to me, and this is everything I want to put on my skin every day.
So, eventually, I created one.
That is often how I formulate at Youthology. I begin with something I genuinely want to use myself, then become slightly obsessed with what should be in it, why it is there and whether it is included at a meaningful concentration.
What did I want from my skincare routine?
At this age, I know my skin rather well.
I know I have damaged it in the sun over the years. I know it needs more hydration than it once did. I want to support firmness and softness, and I want that lovely glow that makes skin look healthy and alive.
I also know that I am a grown-up now and much better at looking after myself than I was at 30.
What I do not want is fifteen different products or an impossibly complicated routine. I want purposeful ingredients, carefully considered formulations and a ritual that makes sense.
That became the starting point for Youthology skincare.
A simple two-step skincare ritual
The Bioactive Peptide Serum comes first.
It is the water phase of the ritual, combining hydration with a purposeful multi-peptide complex and complementary bioactive ingredients. I apply it to clean skin and give it a moment to absorb.
Then I follow with the Biomimetic Lipid Elixir.
This is the lipid phase. It nourishes and softens the skin, supports the skin barrier and helps seal in the hydration applied beneath it.
Water first. Lipids second. Hydrate, then seal.
Two distinct formulas, each with a clear role.
Why keep the water and lipid phases separate?
What I particularly love is that we have not combined the two phases in a cream or emulsion.
Keeping them separate allows me to decide how much of each my skin needs—and my skin does not need exactly the same thing every day.
If it is the middle of summer and my skin feels comfortable, I might apply the serum followed by only one drop of the Lipid Elixir.
In winter, after travelling or whenever my skin feels particularly dry, I can use a little more.
I do not need to replace my routine, add another cream or suddenly acquire an entire bathroom cabinet of solutions. I simply adjust the balance.
Why might your skin need different care on different days?
Skin can be affected by changes in weather, humidity, environment and routine. Its needs may also shift as we move through different stages of life.
The same amount of lipid nourishment that feels comfortable during a dry winter may feel like too much on a hot summer morning. After travelling or spending time in an air-conditioned environment, the skin may feel more dehydrated than usual.
An adaptable skincare ritual gives you the freedom to respond to those changes.
There is something rather nice about reaching an age where you know yourself a little better—including knowing your own skin.
You can look at it in the morning and ask:
What do you need today?
Then respond accordingly.
Is this skincare ritual only for mature skin?
Not at all.
One of the thoughts I kept returning to while we were developing these formulas was: I wish I had started doing this when I was 30.
Supporting the skin barrier, maintaining hydration, using thoughtfully formulated actives and protecting the skin from the sun are not things we need to delay until visible signs of ageing appear.
There is a great deal to be said for looking after what you have before becoming preoccupied with trying to get it back.
That is another reason I love the customisable nature of these two formulas.
Younger or naturally oilier skin may prefer less of the lipid phase. Drier or more mature skin may want more. Summer skin may have different needs from winter skin.
There is no single quantity that will be perfect for every person, in every climate, on every day.
You simply find the balance that feels right for you.
How do you adjust your skincare routine?
Begin with the same simple order:
- Apply the Bioactive Peptide Serum to clean skin.
- Allow it a moment to absorb.
- Follow with the Biomimetic Lipid Elixir.
- Adjust the amount of elixir according to how your skin feels.
- In the morning, always complete your routine with a broad-spectrum sunscreen.
If your skin feels comfortable and balanced, begin with less elixir. If it feels dry, tight or in need of extra nourishment, add another drop.
The idea is not to analyse your skin into submission. It is simply to notice it.
The one thing I would tell my younger self
If I could go back and give my 30-year-old self one skincare instruction, it would probably be this:
Wear sunscreen. Every day.
Looking after the skin you have is far more sensible than spending years trying to reverse damage later. So, in the morning, always follow your serum and Lipid Elixir with a good broad-spectrum sunscreen.
I suppose these formulas really were made by me, for me. But I hope that is precisely what makes them work for so many other people too.
I wanted the important ingredients in considered formulations, at meaningful concentrations, without adding more simply for the sake of having more.
Because good skincare does not need to be complicated.
It needs to make sense for your skin.
And your skin is allowed to change its mind tomorrow.
